Puppets & Traditions Video

Check out the great 10 minute video on the making of the giant puppets in Puppets & Traditions!  Video by Kirk Schwartz of MediaNet.

ICA and PUENTE Theatre collaborated to create “Puppets and Traditions”, a presentation of giant puppets made by immigrant newcomer artists. Working with master puppeteer Tim Gosley, designs by immigrant newcomer artists were transformed into giant puppets. Following a puppet parade, international storytellers brought the puppets to life for an audience of 250 at St. John the Divine Church in Victoria.

Directed by Lina de Guevara of PUENTE Theatre with puppeteer Tim Gosley, this puppet and storytelling celebration marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racism on March 21, 2010. Participants included newcomers from China, Cuba, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, Chile, Kenya and South Africa.

Also taking part in the celebration were international storytellers Jean Pierre Makosso, Barbara Pogemiller and Izad Etemadi, who told culturally diverse stories relating to the puppets. The audience was invited to join in the procession with simple butterfly puppets that children made before the event.

This project was made possible through the funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
